As festival season comes to a close, Afropunk dazzled with a mashup of styles, sounds, and art forms. The festival ran August 26 & 27 at Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park and featured acts such as SZA, Kaytranada, Solange, Thundercat, and more! Our Vida Kush intern, Salima Allen tells all about what she loved about Afropunk 2017.
"A strong emphasis on personal style and bold statement pieces were just the basics at this fashion forward festival, which is what we are all about here at Vida Kush! I couldn't help but be overwhelmed and inspired by the amount of creativity people had put into their festival looks!"
"Let's not forget about the music! When entering the festival its easy to get lost admiring all the beautiful people and outfits, but I was more than thrilled to be able to see British beauty, NAO perform live. She sang her heart out during a pink sunset with her sweet and soulful voice. The lineup also included Princess Nokia, Anderson Park, and others whom left us dancing all day and night!
The energy level of the festival was so magical, there was almost always circles being made on the dance floor for people to jump into, and dance freely while a crowd cheered them on. Afropunk served as a safe space for people to enjoy themselves free of judgment, and express themselves however they pleased. I would highly recommend going to this fest if given the opportunity! So be ready to let your freak flag fly, rock your flyest outfit, and hit the dance floor next year. See you there!"
